Sense and reference in an NLP parser

zondag 18 september 2011 19:50

Consider this short story.

George Bush was lazy. When I called him he just ignored me. But when I was sad he always comforted me. Gosh, I loved that cat.

It is tempting to resolve an obvious reference directly. So when the name "George Bush" comes along you look up entity by that name in the knowledge base and directly attach the new statement to it.

But when we continue the story, the former president of the US of A will have an even stranger predicate attached:

This is obviously a bad idea. So what we need to do is create a temporary object within our context of discourse to which we add the predicates and to which we add the most likely external reference:

This implementation reminds me of the distinction between sense and reference. The reference of a word is the object it denotes in the world. The sense of a word is the cognitive representation of the object in an agent. In our case both sense and reference are representations. But one of them, reference, is more absolute. The sense of a word is here an object in working memory whereas the reference of a word is an object in long term memory.

Now when the last sentence is parsed, we will drop the external reference when we find out we are in error (how we do this is another story). The temporary object can later be added as a new entry to our knowledge base. A second entry with the name George Bush.

Naming a cat after George Bush is not as unlikely as it may seem. George Bush loves cats. And no, we don't call George Bush a cat. We're not hippies.

I am reading "Linguistic Semantics" by William Frawley. A wonderful book full of new ideas.

This review is from: I pasehurcd this pair of sunglasses a couple of months ago and I'm using it almost everyday. I got the matte black with warm grey lenses. They look very good, specially if you have a big face (like me) and you like the RB aviator style. This have a very similar fit to the RB aviators 62mm, not so straight looking, covering a little bit more of your face.Very lightweight, I use them all the time for driving (I drive for an hour everyday and hardly notice i have them on!) or as a lifestyle pair. The lenses although scratch very easily so be careful, and purchase a case to carry them around with the microfiber bag. I've been trying to get some replacement lenses and they don't seem to exist online at least so, as I said, take very good care of them!Like any pair of aviators, they are a little big fragile, so be careful not to sit or step on them, doesn't really matter if they're o-Matter and everything, they'll probably break.Bottomline: Great pair, but take good care of them.

You should just hire a tile inealtlsr. A shower pan liner is not an easy thing to put in if you don't know what your doing. It will cost you a LOT MORE to replace the pan, shower base, tile, and everything else that will get damaged from the leaks if you do this wrong, compared to what it will cost to hire a professional.

ooooh it looks fabs! is that marble or trivertane tiles?we're currently remodelling our bathroom too and bought some wow-factor slate panels that turned to be a nightmare. They look stunning but our contractor is not sure about the slate panels being used in wet areas! The supplier is not of a great help either and we are now stuck with a semi-dilapidated bathroom!looking forward to see your end result. And fingers crossed for mine too. http://orlwkdsqd.com guuivewzmwx [link=http://ajlgrqnmyu.com]ajlgrqnmyu[/link]
